The Caleb Thorburn Foundation (www.thecalebthorburnfoundation.com.au) was officially launched at the Royal Childrens Hospital, Melbourne on July 16th and was attended by over 70 people.
The Foundation was established by Liselle and Steve Thorburn in memory of their son Caleb, who died at 18 months from Meningococcal Disease. Liselle, who is also President of the Foundation, spoke about her family's experience and her commitment to raising awareness about the disease. The official launch was conducted by Dr Jim Buttery, Infectious Disease Specialist at the Royal Childrens Hospital, who also spoke about the devastating effects of the disease and the importance of early recognition and treatment.
The event also involved the launch of the new "Five Minutes to Save a Life" DVD, which was produced by Media One and funded by Nanotechnology Victoria. The aim of the DVD is to highlight how Meningococcal Disease can be recognised in it's earliest stages and how suspected cases should be handled. The DVD is being made available to childcare workers, doctors and schools and will also be available for viewing online via many of the Australian Meningococcal Disease Foundations websites.
Included in the DVD is information about the rapid, point-of-care test for Meningococcal Disease under development by Nanotechnology Victoria and Quintain NS. For further information, please click here.
